The Death of an Icon

On February 19th, 2019, a legendary German super-designer- Karl Lagerfeld- passed away at the age of 85 due to an unspecified illness. His state of health was monitored by medical professionals weeks prior when Lagerfeld missed several of Chanel’s haute couture shows in Paris.

Lagerfeld, most notable for being the creative power behind the modern revival of Chanel and Fendi, was a pioneer and carved a path for future designers to explore and receive inspiration from.

When I was in middle school, I followed my grandmother and my father to Milan, Italy to attend the fashion show that was being held at the time. When we were checking-out of the hotel on the last day, I felt a tight squeeze on my right shoulder. Looking up, I realized that my dad was directing me towards where Karl Lagerfeld was standing. My younger self timidly approached the great Lagerfeld. I still remember this moment vividly. I spoke the words, “guten tag,” which means “good day” in German. Looking confused, Karl Lagerfeld gave me a smile and walked away. Even though the moment was extremely short, I will never forget the charisma that dripped down his black suit.

Rest In Peace Karl Lagerfeld.

I want to give my condolences to Mr. Lagerfeld’s family, friends, and people who looked up to him.
